The practice died out in the early s as bigger houses with front parlors became the norm. Disdain from outsiders and pressures from clergy also hastened bundling’s demise.

Think about your daily interactions with people. When you go to the store, for example, you follow a certain script—a series of steps—to interact with the cashier. These kinds of scripts are generally known by everyone within a culture when they are children, and they are intended to make social interactions easier. We don’t need to think about what we should say or do in specific situations—we have scripts all ready to go in our heads.

These scripts also apply to courtship and dating. For example, imagine that a man asks a woman on a date, and when the check comes, the woman pays for both of them. Although it’s not unheard of, it might sound a bit weird. We all tend to expect that the man is going to pay, or at least that they’re going to split the bill. These unspoken and assumed expectations around what is acceptable or “what people do” during a date are what courtship scripts are.

But courtship scripts are not always good for everyone. In a world where gender roles and relations are changing quickly, norms around dating are apparently not changing as fast.

The pathways to stable intimate unions are best understood as developmental trajectories in which a series of steps, or stages, lead to a marriage or other intimate relationship. There are typical, or customary patterns of mate-selection found in all societies, ranging from arranged marriages by parents to virtually unfettered individual free choice by the couple themselves. At the same time, these cultural patterns change, often quickly, in response to larger social conditions.

To put the current situation in perspective, I offer an abbreviated history of American courtship and dating customs. Largely as a result of their ethnic composition, mate-selection of the early American settlers closely resembled the European customs of courtship. Parents were heavily involved in courtship because the consequences of marriage had implications for them in the form of offspring, property, or social alliances. At least until the middle 19 th century, couples met and associated mainly in public, at church, dances, picnics, or other communal gatherings.

As things progressed, young men would call on young women at their homes where parents would supervise. Not until the couple was betrothed were they allowed much privacy or sexual intimacy which meant kissing and petting. Parents became less involved in courtship as the primary consequences of marriage shifted from the older generation to the younger couple themselves. Mass, mandatory public education meant that all youths were segregated among other single youths for most of a new phase of life that came to be called adolescence.

And changing technologies such as movie theaters and automobiles and back seats allowed much greater privacy. Courtship was replaced by dating in the first two or three decades of the 20 th century.

Given the social centrality of the family institution and the role of courtship in the family formation process, it is not surprising that the study of courtship has received attention from several disciplines. Anthropologists have described practices in primitive and other societies, historians have traced courtship patterns in America from colonial to contemporary times, psychologists and social psychologists have examined intra- and interpersonal components of relationships, and sociologists have developed research-based theories explaining the process of mate selection, and have investigated various courtships dynamics.

Here, some attention will be given to each of these approaches, along the way selectively noting scholars who have made major contributions. Historically, according to Rothman, the term courtship applied to situations where the intention to marry was explicit if not formally—and mutually—stated. Courting was the broader term used to describe socializing between unmarried men and women” Rothman , p. Scholars have disagreed as to whether dating—a twentieth-century term for a primarily recreational aspect of courting—should be considered a part of courtship since, according to Waller and others, dating may be merely thrill-seeking and exploitative, and not marriage oriented but see Gordon for an opposing view.

However, wooing that is, seeking favor, affection, love, or any of these may be integral to courtship and yet not result in marriage. For present purposes, then, courtship will be understood in its broadest sense—as a continuum from casual to serious. Thus, “the unattached flirt, the engaged college seniors, the eighth-grade ‘steadies,’ and the mismatched couple on a blind date are all engaging in courtship” Bailey , p.
